Today was weigh-in day.
I showed a zero loss. Weighed the same as last Wednesday.
What's baffling is that when I did a preview weigh-in on Monday, I was down almost three pounds. From lunch Monday through this morning's trip to the scales, I ate three grilled chicken salads, another salad, and for dinner Monday night a baked cornish hen (really small chicken).
Somebody want to tell me what the heck's going on here? Did I drink too much water the night before? I don't think so. But then, who knows.
Anyway, while I'm trying to figure this out, here's the updated scoreboard:
Week One - Lost 9

How Did I Get Here?
From time to time I have time to think. Usually when I'm on the road.
That's one of the reasons I enjoy driving, no matter the length of the trip. The quiet time alone gives me a chance to clear my mind, work through things, or just quietly contemplate one thing or another.
Recently, a lot of that time has been spent wondering how I allowed myself to get into such sad physical shape.
Laziness played a role in it. I won't deny that. It would be foolish to do so. There were times when it was easier, more comfortable, to do nothing. Just lie on the couch or sit in the recliner, watching TV and eating. Eating and watching TV.
That was a small part of it. Really, my whole lifestyle became one void of physical activity.
My job in the media world has usually required a lot of sitting. Either behind the computer, in the car traveling, or covering a game.
Laziness doesn't apply so much in my work life. I do work hard, take pride in what I do, and try to be the best I can. But whether it's as a sportswriter, a sportscaster or a talk show host, I allowed myself to become less and less mobile as the years rolled by.
Add to that odd, late hours and press box and/or fast food - which is sometimes all that's available - and you end up with the finished product I started with once I began this journey back in December.
What really hit home was when I sat down and thought about the fact that neither of my kids have ever known their dad to be anything but fat. And being that size has limited my ability to do things outdoors with them.
I love them, support them, attend all their events, but much more than 5 minutes of standing on my feet throwing a softball with my youngest and my back hurt so badly that I couldn't take it.
So, I had to sit down.
Now, hopefully, I've got things moving permanently in the right direction. Luckily, I still have time to spend with my kids and show them what ol' dad used to be back when he was an athlete. Or something similar, anyway.
There's still a long way to go. But hopefully now I'm finally on the right path.

This Ain't Bull Durham
Here in Durham, N.C. this weekend for Clemson's baseball series against the Blue Devils. Happy to report the Tigers finally snapped the 11-game losing streak with a 7-4 win on Friday night.
Trip has gone well so far, for the most part. Did eat late last night after the game, but it was the first thing I had since lunch at about 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be light today at the ballpark, too...And then dinner at a reasonable hour at a great place - Ted's Montana Grill.
Anyway, I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their continued support on this matter. It has definitely had its moments of trial and tribulation, and I know there's more to come.
Getting the words of encouragement from you folks means more than you know, so please keep it up.
Also, for those of you who began weight loss programs after I went public, send me updates. Give me the same opportunity to encourage you.
Oh, and by the way, what does the Duke script "D" logo have in common with Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devil basketball team from last year?
A great big hole in the middle.

Birth Of A Notion
Today is Monday, April 14.
Forty-one years ago today, the Good Lord saw fit to allow my mother to give birth to a healthy child. A boy, who would grow up into the Round Mound of Radio Sound which blogs before you today.
Haven't blogged since last weigh-in day. I've been pretty disgusted about yet another week of gaining weight.
It's funny. I'm not a person who exhibits much emotion. Never have been. I'm not a person to blame others for my faults. McDonalds isn't to blame for me being fat. I'm to blame. And when I see people on these talk shows, sniffing and snotting about how their life has been ruined because someone made the coffee too hot, I can't help but think of The Eagles' song "Get Over It:"
"I'd like to find your inner child and kick its little ass."
However, I will concede that an experience like I'm going through now is an emotional rollercoaster.
It's amazing how good I feel when the scales reveal positive results. It's equally as amazing how my day, and sometimes my week, is ruined when I find out I've gained a couple of pounds.
Not that I'm ready to go crying to Oprah. Hardly.
In my world, when you're faced with adversity you pick yourself up off the floor, dust off, and keep working and trying to move forward.
And that's what I've done. The pre-weigh-in look at the scales this morning indicates I'm back on the positive side of the ledger again. So we'll see.
Sometimes I think my life would make a great reality show.

Back At It
Made it back from Miami this afternoon.
Clemson didn't fare so well, losing all three games to the No. 2 Hurricanes. However, I think I held up better than okay.
Stuck to the diet for almost the whole weekend. I say almost, because I did break down and have a cheeseburger and chocolate milkshake Sunday afternoon at the stadium. My rationale, though, was simple:
The Devil made me do it.
No, seriously, after spending three days of walking up and down steps from field level to our broadcast location I more than worked it off. And speaking of that, no back pain and I got up the steps with no problems breathing.
Another small victory, and great motivator.

Sunshine, And Then Some
Coming to you tonight from Titusville, Fla.
I lived here for 18 great months over 1991-92. Made some lifelong friends, worked in both radio and newspaper...got to watch a dozen space shuttle launches.
I'm stopping here tonight on my way to Miami for Clemson's series this weekend. In the car about 8 1/2 hours on the way here. Traveling like that has always been an excuse to eat - candy, sodas, burgers...anything you can eat on the run.
Today though I was good. Lots of water. A Subway roast beef on wheat. Some sunflower seeds.
It also helped that I had the Reds-Diamondbacks game on via XM Radio to keep me company. Took my mind off wanting to eat out of habit (by the way, Reds win 3-2. Johnny Cueto rocks!).
Tonight it's dinner with friends. A little later than I should, but it will be fine.
One big challenge looming, though.
A guy at the ballpark in Miami makes and sells the absolute best milkshakes in the world. It's no contest. Nothing comes close.
And I'm there for three games.
Sigh.
