How I Get Motivated

Made it through my first workout back in the gym today.

Vernon took it easy on me. That's sure to change. I've also had a good day back on the Ultra Fit meal plan. So that's a start.

What is it I've said way too many times in the past? One day at a time. One meal at a time.

The problem, as I'm sure you're all well aware, is motivation. Or to be more precise, lack of it. Finding that extra gear I had for most of 2008 just hasn't happened yet, no matter how many different tactics I take.

Or no matter how much John or anyone else tries to motivate me.

John has been a God-send to me and so many others with his expertise, his caring attitude and his persistence. But the one thing that doesn't work on me is heavy motivational tactics.

They never have. I was never the type of athlete that needed a locker room speech to get me going. I had no problem being motivated to play when the time came, and I honestly thought most of those tactics by coaches were a little lame. That's being as honest as I can be.

That carries over here. John can only do so much. Vernon can only do so much. Ultimately it falls squarely on my shoulders, and no amount of rah-rah or finger-wagging is going to make one bit of difference.

I have to find motivation in other ways, and to this point in 2009 it's been maybe the biggest challenge I've had in my life.

Then, out of the blue, two seemingly innocent incidents - separate of one another - happened in the last two days.

The first, yesterday, was an email I received from a lovely girl named Billie who has been following me on this journey since Day One. She also has weight issues, has had success with Ultra Fit, and was thanking me for - in her words - all I've done for her.

Kinda drives home the point that there are others out there watching, waiting, hoping. Sometimes you feel like you're in this fight alone. Sometimes you don't want to hear from other people.

But Billie's email touched me, as many of her letters have in the past. Perhaps she's my guardian angel during this point of my life. I'm not sure. I just hope she continues to fight and fight and fight some more. Because she's been as much an inspiration to me as she says I've been to her.

The second incident took place this evening.

I was in line at the grocery store and a young man very politely spoke to me, inquiring if he could ask me something personal. It was about my weight loss, and how it was going.

I told him that the last seven months have been a struggle, I'm sure I've put at least 25 pounds back on, and that my shopping cart was full of Ultra Fit plan food, seeing as how I started back on the program today.

He proceeded to tell me that two years ago he lost 160 pounds, doing cardio at the YMCA (he has a heart condition that doesn't let him lift weights) and following a healthy diet. Great story.

Then one night after church, he tells me, he got a craving for pizza. Went and got one, and ate the whole thing. That began a downward spiral that has seen him put back on 250 pounds.

There was a sadness in his eyes as he spoke. He was near tears. He mentioned he enjoyed John's segment on the show, and again reiterated that he just wanted to know how I was doing.

As I left I wished him good luck, and drove home with an gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach. Only this time it wasn't hunger.

It was motivation.

That young man, along with Billie, did more for me in a combined span of probably five minutes than I've done for myself in the past seven months. That's why I did this weight loss effort publicly beginning in Dec. 2007. I wanted to be held accountable. I wanted support. I wanted to share experiences with those going through the same struggles.

How long does the motivation last this time around?

I have no idea.

Again, all I can do is take it one day, one meal at a time. And so far, it's one good day in the books.

Back in the gym at 7:30 a.m. And for the first time in a long time, I'm looking forward to being there.

Do you weight yourself? Is that not motivation enough? I've heard about the scales being locked at Clemson. Good grief. Calibrate some scales at your house and stop using the scales being locked up as an excuse. And then exercise some self control!

Dan,
I apologize if you feel that I was giving you a locker room speech at any time or lecturing you.
I don't ever consider myself giving Locker Room Speeches or lecturing people. I speak the truth from a caring heart. My goal was to SAVE YOUR LIFE and GIVE YOU A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE DAN!
I offered the same for your family out of state.
You see, As much as others will see it as Weight Loss and looking better...
I see my work as SAVING A LIFE and GIVING SOMEBODY BACK THEIR LIFE and GIVING SOMEONE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.
I'm a "BOTTOM LINE" type of guy and the "bottom line" here is
that "I CARE!"
I care about you Dan.
I care about the future of others who don't stand a chance in a world where few people truly care about anything but themselves or their personal interests.
I am blessed financially and I have many business investments and properties that allow me to do my work without worrying about the money, therefore, this (Dan's Journey) is not and never was about the money.
Initially the idea was brought to me to help Dan by a friend of mine who listened to Dan's show. (Karl Weisenbeck).
I tuned in to Dan and I felt that he needed help and that we could help him. I asked for nothing in return. (not even the radio segment until he felt that the program, my knowledge and Vernon's training and guidance had enough value for him to talk about it on the air)
Then I spoke to Vernon about Dan.
Vernon is an Angel in my life that was delivered to me from God when I needed him most to help me to help others.
Vernon undoubtedly agreed and then we met Dan at my house to begin the journey.
That meeting meant alot to me.
That meeting meant alot to Vernon.
A program that works and has worked for tens of thousands of people over the past 27 years, two fitness experts and trainers who care and a gym full of Ultra Fit team members that care!
I am proud of our team and our program. I know the value of our team and I make every effort to utilize every tool we have to empower the person that we are trying to save.
The opportunity was there and the time was right for Dan. He immediately got great results and lost over 60 pounds.
We were proud of Dan and we are once again proud of Dan for getting up and getting back on the horse. I know he has it in him. It's all about reaching deep and understanding that YOUR LIFE is on the line.
My mom had 3 heart attacks from the time that she was 36-42 years old. When I was just a teenager I took 180 pounds off of her and she is living a great life still at 77 years old.
If anyone asks me why I care so much about helping people lose weight and become healthy, there is one answer:
MY MOTHER.
I have enjoyed and savored a great relationship with her all of these years and she is a reminder why my work is so important.
Dan...Once again...
You are special and you have ALOT of people that do care about you.
They want you to be healthy and happy.
Your life is valuable and worth it and we are not going to give up on you.
May God Bless you and give you the ability to step up and embrace this opportunity.
He cares more than anyone.
With Respect,
John DeFendis

Dan, simply put the spotlight is on you... Your blog is your best way to stay accountable. How many people do you keep accountable with this may be unknown.. If there is just one then that is all there needs to be. What if that person decides that quitting is ok? You may not have asked to be a role model but you are there..

John made a commitment to save lives... Will you?

Ask yourself this...

What level of Honesty are you living now?

How Honest are you with Strangers, Institutions and Businesses,
Acquaintances, Friends, Family, Spouse?

How Honest are you with yourself?

"Our lives improve only when we take chances - and the first and most difficult risk we can take
is to be Honest with Ourselves."
Do you Feel good? Are you Happy with who you are?

John is one of the most Honest men I know... He is a Man of Intergrity..
The only true gift is a portion of thyself.
And that is what John does... He gives, and gives and gives never asking for anything in return...

We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart:love, kindness, joy, understanding, sympathy, tolerance, forgiveness.
We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind:ideas, dreams, purposes, ideals, principles, plans, inventions, projects, poetry.
We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the spirit:
prayer, vision, beauty, aspiration, peace, faith.
We give of ourselves when we give the gift of words: encouragement, inspiration, guidance.
THat is John...
I know him as someone who only Cares about Others... He wants people to realize how important thier lives are, to themselves and to their Family...

I live in New York and he is there anytime day or night to support me with my Goal to be the best that I can... No matter how near or far you are he is always there to give you 110%... That is someone who LOVES what they do...

Take a moment to stop and think about what you give to the people and life around you...Look instead at all you do that is a blessing, Don't you want your Family and Friends to Have more of you for a longer time...

People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things..
When they Believe in themselves they have the first secret of success...
Have a Blessed Day!!!

Dan, Don't Quit

Dan, When things go wrong as they sometimes will;
Dan, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill;
Dan, When the funds are low, and the debts are high;
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;
Dan, When care is pressing you down a bit
Dan, Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Dan, Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you can never tell how close you are;
Dan, It may be near when it seems afar.
So, stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
Dan, It's when things go wrong that you mustn't quit.

Promise Yourself...

Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturbe your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel like there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living person you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, and too strong for fear, and to happy to permit the presence of trouble.

LIVE IT EVERY DAY DAN AND YOU WILL BE BETTER FOR IT WHETHER OR NOT YOU LOSE A POUND.

Dan - say this to yourself tomorrow. It's what I use every day five minutes before I go on the air:

"I'm going to do a terrific show today! And I'm gonna help people! Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and, doggonit, people like me!"

Gerald Porter said...

Defendis - dan isn't feeling anything probably that you didn't feel when you struggled to go from the skinny guy getting sand kicked in your face to muscel man. it's just the reverse of the same problem...someone wanting to feel better about himself. just remember what you went through at that time and know that dan is trying and trying and having to deal with every day the feelings of doubt and self defeating feelings. Dan...
The following weight loss results were taken from a Blog that you made back in October of last year when you started the Ultra Fit program.

Began Ultra Fit
Week 1 - Lost 10 lbs.
Week 2 - Lost 7 lbs.
Week 3 - Lost 2 lbs.
Week 4 - Lost 6 lbs.
Week 5 - Lost 3 lbs.
Week 6 - Lost 4 lbs.
-------------------------
First 6 weeks = a 32 lb. weight loss in just the first 6 weeks!

You did that with a combination of 3 things:

1. Your Focus & Discipline
2. A Program Guaranteed to work.
3. A Trainer who Cares about you and trainers who have your best interest at heart.

You can focus on Success and have the confidence that you can do this because you know that the program will work.
You also know that it is important to you, your family and those people who listen to you daily...the people who admire you and care about you.

You can get the results and you can help more people who struggle with their weight loss everyday.
Allow your weaknesses to become your strengths and you will make a profound difference in the lives of others.
Your Success will EMPOWER people to go after and attain their weight loss, health & fitness goals!
You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
With Respect,
John DeFendis
