Big Mouth

Honesty may be the best policy, but as it turns out it's also a painful one.

Spent the weekend in West Virginia visiting with my parents while they were having a new roof put on their house. I did very well with my meal plan almost the entire weekend. Made the necessary provisions for eating while on the 5-hour drive up and back, and had the right kind of food at their house while we were there.

I say almost, because I gave in to temptation once. Saturday night. Pizza place. Not a good move.

Food was good. But telling Vernon about it today wasn't.

Just to show me he has a sense of humor - as well as a sense of purpose - once he found out I cheated Vernon promptly got out the two 25-pound weights and sent me to the stairs. Five up and five down.

Payback for the pizza, he said.

And while it was still difficult, it wasn't nearly as hard as it was two weeks ago. So I'm still showing progress.

Vernon just wants more.

And honestly, so do I. I have to quit rationalizing and stick to the plan.

Instead of saying to myself, "Well, I've eaten about one bad meal every week for the last few weeks and I'm still losing 3-4 pounds a week," I've got to make myself stay more focused. If I skip that bad meal, and the occasional picking at other foods I shouldn't eat, that total would be averaging 5-8 pounds per week on this system.

So, I continue to struggle with myself.

But I have a feeling as long as Vernon has anything to do with it, I'll end up getting it right.

I don't believe in this philosophy of dieting. Portion control (reduced caloric intake) and increased exercise (increased caloric output) are the keys to weight loss.

Pizza doesn't make a person overweight--eating too much pizza does!

Candy doesn't make a person overweight--eating too much candy does!

Likewise, incorporating a small amount of pizza or candy into a diet doesn't impede weight loss!

Eating habits for the overweight have been developed over many years and they don't change in an instant. If you restrict a person on a diet from having any those "pleasure" foods from the pre-diet lifestyle, you run the risk of having that person give up due to the frustration of dealing with such a sudden change in diet. It just doesn't change overnight. And it shouldn't...

Dan, have a a slice of pizza when you want it. Add a salad to it and you've got a perfectly healthy meal.

I just don't buy this weight-loss theory that asserts the so-called "junk foods" are 100% off-limits (and certain styles of pizza are certainly not junk food). For the better part of the diet, yes, the bad foods are off-limits, but there is nothing wrong with a very conservative holiday from the diet and indulging oneself in those foods.

And this personal trainer "Vernon" shouldn't be as arrogant to think that you deserve physical "retaliation" for having the pizza.

JC..No offense, but that kind of thinking is what has me in the situation I'm in. There may come a point down the road where I can balance out a few such meals, but right now every one is a roadblock on my path to success. As I wrote, rationalization is a problem I have. Having lost over 90 pounds is great...but I was so far gone that I still need to lose over 100 more. And "cheating" every once in a while is going to slow that process. As for Vernon, he is many things. Arrogant isn't one of them. Never met a more soft-spoken person in my life. What he's trying to teach me is accountability, and I'm thankful for his efforts.

JC,
With all due respect...
Please look at the background of Ultra Fit.
We have helped tens of thousands of people over the past 30 years.
We have saved lives, we have changed lives...we have allowed good people to live longer so they could enjoy their families and be instrumental in developing family values and raising good children.
We did this with Ultra Fit.
Ultra Fit is not just a diet...
Ultra Fit is a concept and a program. Ultra Fit is believing in our success from looking at the people we have helped, and by believing in us and our program...
We then show you how to believe in yourself and go after your goals.
To think like a WINNER!
I do not agree with your theory of "It's okay to cheat yourself and eat unhealthy". That would be like saying that it is okay not to work hard If you have enough money or not to strive to be the best that you can be.
If I followed your beliefs then I would not have saved my mothers life, I would not have helped thousands of people live longer and healthier lives and I would not have ever accomplished any of the goals I set for myself and achieved through hard work and discipline. Please stop raining on peoples parades by telling them that they can cheat or fail themselves.
Life is about embracing opportunity and shooting for the stars. Life is about BEING YOUR BEST so you can offer your best to others and enrich their lives.
Your theory of cutting calories and doing more cardio is just what has allowed this country to become overweight, obese and unhealthy.
Losing muscle by cutting calories and exercising more will only allow the person to gain back more weight.
I would gladly welcome you to meet some of our clients while they are getting the results, after they have gotten the results and years later as they are enjoying the results.
I would also like to meet the people that you have taken more than 100 pounds off of.
(We have over 200 of them in the past 2 years alone)
And as the founder and leader of Ultra Fit for 26 years, I am not arrogant...I am "PASSIONATE" about my role because we save and change lives everyday and I am so very proud of our work.
Stay blessed and have a nice day!
Sincerely & Respectfully,
John DeFendis
